Complete ultra low mile Toyota 2ZZ-GE 1.8L VVTLi 180/190hp MR2 Spyder ENGINE SWAP PACKAGE. If you’re looking to swap a 2ZZ into your 2000-05 MR2 Spyder then this is the package for you.
MWR keeps these engines in stock! We pack these with care so it generally takes 2-4 business days from the time of ordering until we load it on the truck to ship to your location. Prep time is slightly longer if you select LSD, piston or cam upgrades.
A good used 2ZZ engine is getting nearly impossible to find; the untested overseas engines are a real risk and are very often defective. MWR knows more about these engines than anyone so we start with the freshest engines money can buy (30-60k miles) and replace the lift bolts (often a BIG job!) and valve cover seal, plus we replace any cams, rockers, timing chain or other components if any significant wear is detected. We inspect for leaks, and perform a full compression/spin test. We also inspect thoroughly for any shipping/mechanical damage and missing sensors / solenoids. This is a LOT of work and involves some expensive components if replacements are made, that’s why our swap package costs more than the run of the mill unknown condition JDM drop out.
Once inspected, we take great care in preparing the package for installation including installing any possible swap parts and removing items that are not needed.

- JDM Celica GTS ECU with 8250rpm rev limit, 6000rpm VVL engagement (or upgrade to USA ECU programmable Power FC)

- 2ZZ OEM flywheel (used-can be resurfaced)
- Swap-specific coolant caps preinstalled
Bolts to your current 5-speed manual transmission or any MWR MR2-S 6-speed transmission (sold separately).
By default we include a JDM Toyota ECU which works great, just requires a JDM OBD scanner if you want to check codes and will not pass emission check in the USA. You can upgrade to a USA market Toyota ECU which will communicate with standard OBD scanner and communicate with emissions check computers (if swap is done properly there will be no error codes). Both have 6000rpm VVL and 8250RPM rev limit. You can also choose to upgrade to the Apexi Power FC which is a fully programmable ECU, we’ll even load the correct program for you free of charge. This provides a lower VVL point, higher rev limit and more performance throughout the RPM range. Be aware, the Power FC has no OBD functionality and will not pass an emissions check.
Choose VVL connector kit if you’re comfortable doing a moderate amount of wiring work, similar to installing a car stereo. Upgrade to Plug N Play harness for a very easy plug-in installation, and no need to modify your engine wire harness.
You’ll need a header (exhaust manifold):
MWR’s long tube header with high flow cat pipe is the best, strongest, highest performance option available. Works awesome and includes all hardware needed along with an O2 sensor extension harness. High quality high flow cat (though it has no cert# stamped on it, may not be legal in some areas) so no check engine light. Long tube header has a 10-15hp advantage over a short type header.
MWR also offers a less expensive short type header that bolts to your stock cat pipe for the most OEM-looking install which makes emissions inspection easier for some. Also includes hardware/gaskets.
Want your engine spiced up? We can install Mahle forged pistons (includes new head gasket, rod bearings, timing cover seals and valve cover seal) and/or MWR cams and valve springs (includes reshim)!
We include a used flywheel which you can resurface and use with any 1ZZ/2ZZ clutch kit. We do stock a full line of replacement and performance CLUTCHES and FLYWHEELS, please give them a look. Nearly everyone installs a fresh clutch when performing this swap, you don’t want to have to take it all apart again in a few thousand miles to replace a clutch.
